Counterpublic

Counterpublic is a civic triennial in St. Louis focusing on public memory and reparative futures, and one of the largest public art initiatives in the country. Counterpublic 2023 featured over 30 commissions, including 6 permanent public artworks, by leading and emergent artists, architects, collectives and community organizers––such as Raven Chacon, Torkwase Dyson, Ralph Lemon, Cannupa Hanska Luger, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, and Maya Stovall––that take either legal, social, environmental, or political action to reimagine civic infrastructures and spark lasting generational change in St. Louis.

Counterpublic engaged Cultural Counsel to promote the 2023 triennial for a year-long media campaign, which included short lead news announcements; cultivation events with writers, editors, and artworld VIPs leading up to the triennial; and organizing press trips with top-tier journalists. Cultural Counsel secured substantial press on Counterpublic 2023 in such publications as The New York Times, The Guardian, Forbes, artnet News, ARTnews, The Art Newspaper, Architect’s Newspaper, Designboom, Surface, among others.

We are currently at work on Counterpublic 2026.
